Charades

The General Idea

Charades is of pantomime: you have to act out a word or phrase without speaking. For example, "football" could be broken down into "foot" and "ball." "Softball" might be more interesting. Charades can be played with any type of word or phrase; but with kids, you may find that movie titles work best. Sleeping Beauty, Lion King, The Mighty Ducks... Most kids are familiar with many simple titles. And even the youngest child can do Pinocchio!

The Basic Game

There are many variations in playing Charades, but here's one format:

Setting up the game:

  • Divide into teams. Each team does the following.
  • Think of a bunch of titles to be acted out and write each title on a slip of paper or use the samples below.
  • Put the samples in a hat.
  • Give these papers to the opposite team.
  • The teams take turns, and each team picks one of the titles from the other team on its turn.

When it's your turn:

  • First, indicate to your team whether you're going to mime the title of a movie, book, etc.
  • Next, indicate how many words are in the title. (Hold up the right number of fingers.)
  • Now, Have Fun and Good Luck!

Some Advanced Details:

A number of little tricks help the game along.

Getting your point across:

  • To indicate a:movie, pretend to crank an old fashioned movie camera.
  • To indicate a book, pretend to be reading.
  • To divide the word into syllables: lay down x number of fingers on your forearm (where x is the number of syllables.)
  • "big word, little word":place your hands far apart, or close together
  • "sounds like"--cup your hand around your ear
  • "little word"bring your thumb and index fingers close together. The people guessing should now call out every little word they can think of ("on, in, the, and") until you gesticulate wildly to indicate the right word.
  • "Longer version of the word":pretend to stretch an elastic.
  • "close, keep guessing!":frantically wave your hands to keep the guesses coming.
